Pablo Escobar might have been dead for a while now, but he was once the #7 richest man in the world according to Forbes. The drug kingpin grew up in Medellin, Colombia, where he would soon start smuggling goods across the border and later started smuggling Cocaine after he discovered how much it was worth per kilo. This decision paid off as he became the richest man of his country and the 7th richest in the world. At the height of his reign, he was spending $2,500 on rubber bands to hold his money each month.
Pablo Escobar Net Worth: $30 Billion
There are a lot of crazy stories going around that show us how rich Pablo really was. He once burned a million dollars in cash just to keep his family warm in the winter. In fact, he made so much money that at the height of his power he had such a big net worth he didn’t even know what to do with it. He buried billions of dollars in the ground all over Colombia, which is still found sometimes to this date. He had an accountant keep track of all the buried money on maps that pinpointed the exact location, but these maps were lost in his assault on the Colombian government which was carried out by M19, a guerilla group. They burned down all the evidence the Colombian government had found about Pablo Escobar and in the process the maps that contained the location of his buried money were also lost. Sometimes a farmer digs up a few million by accident on land that was previously owned by Escobar.
His net worth started to wind down when he had to finance a war against the Colombian government and competing drug cartels. The main rivals, the Cali cartel, were in a big fight with Escobar over the position to sell cocaine in Miami, which was the drug capital of the world at that time. By the time all was said and done, and Escobar was killed during a Police raid on his safe house he had almost nothing left in cash. His empire had crumbled and all that was remaining was quickly taken over by the Cali cartel.
To some of the residents of Medellin, Pablo Escobar is a holy figure. He even has a whole district named after him called “Barrio Pablo Escobar”. He built the whole district and then gave the houses to the poor. These deeds made him very popular amongst the residents of Colombia which helped him tremendously in escaping from the Police time and time again. Nobody was going to rat out Pablo after everything he had done for the poor. To this date, he’s still honored in his city with murals and photo’s in houses of the people of Meddelin.
Because of his incredible story, a lot of movies and series have been made about his rise and fall. The most famous one is “Narcos”, a Netflix Originals series that focusses on the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar. It accurately displays his big spending habits and also his love for his family and friends.
