The highly anticipated bout between Featherweight champion Conor McGregor vs Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is almost agreed upon by both parties. Sources close in the UFC tell us that the deal is as good as done, and that we can expect an official announcement from the UFC very soon.
The two champions are scheduled to fight at UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden in New York. This will be a legendary UFC event, as it is the first time the UFC will hold an event in New York. The sport recently became legal in the state, which opens up new opportunities for the promotions.
Alvarez recently became champion after defeating Rafael dos Anjos in spectacular fashion on UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs Alvarez on July 7. He has since claimed that “McGregor can’t fight for shit”, so it will be very interesting to see how it will play out in the octagon.
The fight is also very special for another reason, which is the realization of Conor McGregor‘s dream. If he wins the fight against Alvarez he will be the first champion of 2 weight classes at the same time. He originally planned to achieve this at UFC 196 but Dos Anjos got injured before the fight and he got replaced with Nate Diaz. We all know how that played out of course… Most analysts expect that McGregor will vacate the Featherweight belt once he has won the lightweight belt so he can say he is a 2 weight division champion. He’s been packing on a lot of muscle for his fights at welterweight which makes the cut to 145 lbs very hard. Continuing in the 155-pound division seems more suitable for him.
McGregor said: “It’s all about overcoming adversity inside and outside the octagon.” He successfully bounced back from his first loss in the UFC against Nate Diaz and defeated him in their rematch at UFC 202.
At least we know he’s getting the right training. Watch him fighting with The Mountain from Game of Thrones in a bare knucklefight below.
